In February of 2012 I found myself feeling stagnant at 47 years old. I had always been in decent shape and competitive throughout my life…running, soccer, beach volleyball, and with the move to Colorado eight years ago, hiking and peak bagging. Looking at me, most people thought I was in good shape because I was skinny, but I knew I lacked strength and flexibility.
With some very long and hard days coming up that summer in the mountains if I were to attain my climbing goals, I began looking for a gym. Coincidentally, I noticed the York Street Crossfit sign in my neighborhood on the way home one evening. “Awesome! It’s meant to be!” I stopped in to check the place out, having no idea what Crossfit was…and was blown away.
I talked to one of the several excellent trainers. His enthusiasm and sincerity were immediately apparent, as was his passion for Crossfit. He explained the concept to me, and I was hooked. I signed up for the Elements class a week later, and the fun began.
Sore muscles and humility at first, as I discovered I wasn’t nearly as fit as I thought. However, noticeable improvements in strength and mobility happened pretty quickly. I came to the realization that “this stuff works!” Surprisingly, shoulder pain that I had been dealing with off and on for years went away about three weeks after joining the gym. Bonus!
Summer was triumphant. I was climbing peaks in one day that most people were taking two days to climb. It became easy to knock out an 18-20 mile day over varied terrain in the mountains.
So, here I am 10 months after walking in the gym that first day. I feel better physically than I have for many years. I am stronger, faster, more mobile, and pain-free. Thank you to the YSCF crew for the coaching and encouragement. Can’t wait for this next year!
